Things I’m Talking About in Public

personalization

We only own our stories when we understand what our data says about us—and who’s (or what) is interpreting it. Maybe you’re used to telling it like it is IRL. Maybe you’re used to being a little bit of an enigma to your friends, family, and self. How about getting curious about what it might mean to be that dynamic online? How about thinking about personalization as a collaboration between a user and the data they provide, rather than an automation? Sound interesting? Check out my talk at SXSW 2021.

consent-based calibration

One of the most widely agreed upon issues with personalization—and with AI in general—is that it lacks the ability to understand that a user may want to radically change their course or interests: It fails to introduce us to the parts of ourselves that are unknown. Consent based calibration assumes that a person would like to actively participate in creating their own experience. It fosters respect by offering the choice to change that experience at any time. digital products 101

What is a digital product? How can we create the kind of delightful specificity and nuance in digital that we enjoy in real life? And how can we be sure that as the process of product development and best-practices for digital conversions begin to merge, we don’t end up with the most boring internet of all time? Good question. Let’s talk about it. (Or let me talk with your class about it.)
